Welcome to IAGR 2026's Excursion
A geological field excursion will be held on November 14-15, 2026, featuring visits to key geological localities in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
On the first day, participants will explore well-exposed records of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and associated Suture Zone complexes in Chiang Dao and Mae Tang areas, northern Chiang Mai. Well-exposed records of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and associated Suture Zone complexes, including accretionary complexes, oceanic seamount limestone, volcanic arc-related rocks, and sedimentary sequences that document subduction and continental collision processes in northern Thailand. The excursion will highlight the tectonic evolution of the Paleo-Tethys realm and the significance of the Chiang Mai Suture Zone in the regional framework of Southeast Asian geology.
On the second day, participants will focus on the Doi Inthanon Complex, including observations of high-grade gneissic rocks and regional metamorphic features. The excursion will also include visits to Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand, and the culturally important Wat Phra That Chom Thong locality.
